Kindiki’s Biography: A New Era as Deputy President E.G.H.

Hon. (Prof) Kithure Kindiki, PhD, EGH, was born on 16th July, 1973 in Tharaka-Nithi County. He is married to Dr. Joyce G. Njagi-Kithure, and together they have been blessed with xx children.

He currently serves the nation as the Cabinet Secretary for Interior & National Administration, a position he has held since October 2022.

As the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, Hon. Kindiki has led and overseen the achievement of various milestones and reforms, including the Police Equipment Modernization Programme that has significantly enhanced the capabilities of Kenya’s security services, the finalization of a strategic framework to commence implementation of Police Reforms recommended by the Hon. Justice (Rtd) David Maraga led Taskforce, the abolishment of the previous unnecessarily bureaucratic vetting processes for issuance of National Identity cards, recognition of minority groups and stateless communities ensuring they receive Kenyan citizenship and associated rights, the operationalization of the Public Benefit Organizations Act, enhancing the fight against banditry and general insecurity around the country, steering Kenya’s participation in the Multinational Security Support (MSS) For Haiti, development of a legislative proposal to amend the National Government Coordination Act of 2013 to officially recognize village elders in each unit, and the enrolment of 13, 120 inmates into formal education programs; among others.

Prior to his appointment to the Cabinet, Hon. Professor Kindiki served as the inaugural Senator for Tharaka Nithi County; a post he held from 2013 to 2022. During that time, he also served as the Deputy Speaker of the Senate, as well as the Majority Party Leader in the Senate. In his role as Senate Majority Party Leader, he spearheaded the legislative agenda of the Majority Party in the House, as well as providing strategic leadership and connection with the National Assembly and with the Executive Branch of Government. As Senate Deputy Speaker, Hon. Kindiki deputized the Senate Speaker in presiding over seminal sittings and debates in the Senate, and assisting the Speaker of the Senate in enforcing rules of procedure and parliamentary processes. He also diligently performed his oversight and legislative functions in his capacity as a Senator.

Hon. Prof. Kindiki holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B )degree from Moi University, a Postgraduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law, a Master of Laws (LL.M) degree and a Doctorate (Ph.D.) in International Law from the University of Pretoria in South Africa. His professional affiliations include memberships of the Academic Council on the United Nations System (ACUNS), the International Association for the Study on Forced Migration (IASFM), the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), the East African Law Society (EALS), and the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).

As an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with practice experience spanning over twenty-four (24) years, Hon. Kindiki has consulted for numerous international organizations; including the World Trade Organization (WTO), the African Union (AU), the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the United Nations (UN) and UN specialized agencies such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and practiced as a Defence Counsel at the International Criminal Court (ICC) at The Hague.

Prof. Kindiki has also taught law and held various administrative positions at the Moi University School of Law and at the University of Nairobi’s School of Law. He began his career as an Assistant Lecturer in Law at Moi University immediately upon graduating with an undergraduate law degree. He then joined the University of Nairobi as a Lecturer, quickly rosing to the position of Head of Department of Public Law at the young age of 33 and then to the position of Associate Dean at the age of 35. He has authored thirty-five (35) publications including books, book chapters, and articles in local and international peer-reviewed journals.

Hon. Kindiki is an esteemed legal thinker and practioner, an astute debater, an excellent administrator, a distinguished public servant, and a respected diplomat. His influence in the betterment of society span various fields; including governance, public administration, peacebuilding, public policy formulation, constitutional affairs, as well as law-making. In 2015, President Uhuru Kenyatta conferred Hon. Kindiki with our nation’s highest civilian honour, the Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya (EGH), in recognition of his decades-long exceptional and distinguished service to the nation.
