The Implementation of The Competency Based Curriculum & Everything You Need To Know About It
The competency-based curriculum is a curriculum that emphasizes the complex outcomes of the learning process, that is, the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to be applied by learners rather than mainly focusing on what the learners are expected to learn about in terms of traditionally defined subject content.
Components of The CBC curriculum
They include;
- Modules of instruction
- Expected outcomes in terms of knowledge requirements
- suggested instructional strategies
- Assessment strategies.
The role of Kenya Institute of Special Education in Implementing CBC
The Kenya Institute of Special Education has a pathway of reaching out to children with special needs and disabilities. There is a stage-based curriculum that specifically caters to learners with the following disabilities. They include; deafblindness, those with intellectual differences, those with severe autism, those with severe cerebral palsy, and those with multiple disabilities. It works in stages that means it does not observe the age of the particular child.
These stages include;
- Foundation stage
- Intermediate stage
- Pre-vocational stage
- Vocational stage
Other learners who undergo the CBC curriculum include learners who are visually impaired, those that are hearing impaired, and those with physical impairment. These learners undergo the regular curriculum with adaptation, that is, both the classroom and learning materials have been adapted in such a way to suit their educational and developmental needs.
The government has given teachers a study leave teachers to be trained on special needs and education in KISE to make the learning environment adaptive for these learners with special needs.
