Here’s how to apply for a birth certificate in Kenya

A birth certificate is a very important document in Kenya. It is recommended that parents with newborn babies get a birth certificate within the first six months of childbirth failure to which one will be required to get approval from the office of civil registration.
Application for birth certificates in Kenya is done under the following three categories:
1. Application for babies below six months
This can either be done by visiting a Civil Registration Office/Huduma Center or online via an e-Citizen account.
a) Application at Civil Registration Office/ Huduma Centre
Visit the nearest Huduma Centre or if in Nairobi visit ACK Bishop House located opposite NSSF building off Ngong Road or HASS Plaza 4th floor, Lower Hill Road.
Documents required
Notification of birth – this can be obtained from the sub-chief’s office.Your sub-chief will register the child’s birth after you have filled form A1. In Nairobi, it can be obtained from the City Hall or Civil Registration Office. You require a copy of the parents’ ID and a properly filled application for Birth Certificate (Form B4).
b) Online application
This is done using the parents’ e-Citizen account at a fee of Ksh 180 though currently only applications done in Nairobi and Narok can be processed.

Scanned copy of the birth notifications
Scanned copy of the parents’ ID
Paid e-Citizen invoice
Copy of the online field B4 application form
Copies of parents ID cards
Copy of birth notification
2. Application of birth certificates for children between 6 months to 18 years
You require approval from the Civil Registration Offices
Visit a Civil Registration Office in your County (District Birth and Registry offices) or if in Nairobi visit ACK Bishop House opposite NSSFf building
Fill in form B3 necessary for Late Birth Certificate application.
Documents required
Certificate of baptism
Child immunization clinic card
Municipal notification of birth
School leaving certificate
Parent’s ID card or passport
3. Application for an Adult Birth Certificate ( anyone above 18 years)
You will have to visit the Civil Registration Office in your area or nearest to the Huduma Center.
Documents required
National ID
Parents’ original ID/passport/Birth Certificate
KCPE/KCSE Certificate
Baptismal card
Replacing a lost birth certificate
Visit the nearest Civil Registration Office or Huduma Centre
Present your ID or parents ID or school certificates or any document supporting your date of birth.
You’ll be given an entry number.
Reapply for the certificate a new citizen account using the entry number.
NOTE: Application fee for a birth certificate ranges from Ksh 100 to Ksh 200 depending on the type of application.
