A Nairobi court has ordered a mother and son held for 21 days as police probe the murder of clinical psychologist Dr. Victoria Nthunya Mutiso. The magistrate ruled that releasing the duo early risks witness tampering and compromises active investigations.
Under the court order, Rose Mbithe Mulwa will stay at Kileleshwa Police Station, while her son, Chris Mulwa, will remain in custody at Kilimani Police Station.
Although the prosecution sought 30 days, the court capped the detention period at three weeks, finding sufficient cause for ongoing remand.
“The prosecution has established sufficient grounds to justify the continued detention of the respondents,” the magistrate ruled.
Addressing pre-murder threats reported by the victim, the magistrate stressed that the court could not disregard the surrounding circumstances of the killing.
“The remand orders are necessary to prevent actual interference with witnesses and to safeguard ongoing investigations,” the court said.
Detectives arrested the two suspects last Thursday in Karen during an intelligence-led operation.
An affidavit sworn by Corporal Romana Oduor reveals that Dr. Mutiso had reported threats against her life weeks before her death. Investigators told the court that on July 7, 2026, two men on a motorcycle confronted Dr. Mutiso along Ngong Road near Junction Mall, where the pillion passenger allegedly pointed a firearm at her.
Dr. Mutiso escaped unharmed and filed a report at Kilimani Police Station. According to police, she identified the gunman as Chris Mulwa and alerted her husband.
The prosecution identified Rose Mulwa as the former wife of Prof. David Musyimi Ndetei, Dr. Mutiso’s husband. The former couple divorced in 2001 after having four children together, including Chris.
Expanding Murder Investigation
Detectives have widened their probe to examine potential links between Dr. Mutiso’s death and the 2025 murder of lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu. Mbobu had represented Prof. Ndetei in a high-stakes, multi-billion-shilling matrimonial property dispute.
Investigators noted striking similarities between the two homicides, pointing out that assailants monitored both victims prior to the shootings.
Gunmen killed Dr. Mutiso inside a taxi in Nairobi’s Upper Hill neighborhood, just 24 days after she reported the Ngong Road gun incident.
Chief Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor conducted the autopsy, determining that Dr. Mutiso died from multiple gunshot wounds after being shot three times, including twice in the head.
