Mbadi Confident “Impressive” eGP Will End Corruption and Bring Efficiency to Public Spending Richard Kamau

Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi says the ongoing implementation of the electronic Government Procurement (eGP) system is nothing short of impressive as the government looks to seal corrutption loopholes.

Mbadi noted that the digital platform is steadily taking shape nationwide, with 15 County Assemblies and 12 County Executives already fully integrated, while the rest are in the final stages of onboarding.

“The progress so far is impressive,” Mbadi said.

He explained that the eGP system will revolutionize how government institutions acquire goods and services by closing loopholes that have long enabled wastage and corruption.

The Treasury chief further revealed that the platform has been linked to the Kenya Revenue Authority’s (KRA) iTax system to combat tax evasion and strengthen compliance.

“This linkage between eGP and iTax will cure long-standing challenges in tax evasion by ensuring that every procurement transaction is traceable and verifiable,” he stated.

Mbadi added that the integration is expected to help the government save up to Sh200 billion annually through reduced financial leakages and improved revenue collection.

The electronic Government Procurement (eGP) platform, a key pillar of the government’s digital transformation agenda, aims to automate the entire procurement cycle – from tendering and evaluation to contract management and payment.

CS Mbadi described the system as a game-changer that will enhance transparency, efficiency, and accountability in public expenditure.

Initially, some governors resisted the directive, accusing the Treasury of fast-tracking the rollout of what they termed a “defective” and unprepared system incapable of supporting county operations.

“We call on the National Treasury to immediately withdraw the circular directing counties to implement e-GP until proper consultation is done,” the county chiefs said.

In response, Mbadi affirmed that the Treasury is working closely with the Council of Governors and the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) to ensure all 47 counties and national government institutions comply with the system’s requirements.

“The goal is to have a unified, transparent procurement system across all levels of government,” he stated.

The eGP system, which officially launched in July, is now operational across ministries, departments, agencies, and state corporations.

To facilitate a smooth rollout, the Treasury has provided training, technical support through a dedicated call center, and published contact details for all officers involved. Additionally, 100 Trainers of Trainers (ToTs) have been deployed nationwide to guide procuring entities through the implementation process.
