Ruto Blasts Gachagua: “Why Turn Kenyan Youth Into Watchmen While You Celebrate?” Richard Kamau

President William Ruto has lambasted former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for urging young Kenyans to escort and protect him during public appearances, saying the comments are reckless and demean the role of the youth.

Speaking in Samburu, Ruto questioned why a former senior government official would ask civilians to take up security roles, warning that such rhetoric risks dragging young people into political conflict.

“Nimesikia mwingine juzi anawaambia vijana ati nyinyi nikienda mahali mchukue rungu na panga mkuje mniprotect,” Ruto said.

“Unaambia Kenyans wakuje wakulinde kwani ni watchmen wako?”

The President said leaders should invest in creating jobs and opportunities for young people, not turn them into political foot soldiers.

“Yaani sasa unafanya vijana wa Kenya wakuwe watchmen wako wakati unajivinjari,” he added.

Gachagua had earlier asked his youthful supporters to accompany him “for protection” during public engagements. The remarks quickly sparked outrage from civil society groups, who warned that such language could fuel political tension and instability.

Speaking Monday during an interview, Gachagua claimed his life was in danger after the government withdrew his security. He argued that the decision to withdraw his security detail was unjustified and dangerous, insisting that his influence and public standing still warrant state protection.

“I want to tell the people of Kenya that Rigathi Gachagua is not safe. The government withdrew security from him despite his senior status in the country,” Gachagua claimed.

He insisted that even though he no longer holds office, he remains a high-profile political figure with significant public support, which makes him vulnerable without official security.
