“Ruto is Selling Everything that is Working”: Gachagua Uses Cow Metaphor to Criticize Safaricom Sale Richard Kamau

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has sharply criticized President William Ruto for selling off key national assets, including Safaricom, without involving the public.

Speaking on Sunday, December 7, 2025, during a church service at Christian Dominion Ministries in Kasarani, Nairobi, Gachagua warned that Kenya is losing vital institutions that have historically driven the economy. He argued that the government’s decision to sell Safaricom shares undervalues one of the country’s most profitable enterprises.

“The country is being sold every day. Safaricom has been one of the greatest revenue generators for our country, about Ksh18B to Ksh20B every year. Sasa share moja imeuzwa Ksh34, whereas the real value is Ksh70 to KSh80, so the country is losing around Ksh250 B,” he said.

Gachagua Slams Lack of Public Participation

Gachagua also criticized the government for bypassing required public engagement in the sale of Safaricom, framing it as a violation of both law and public trust.

“Sasa hii Safaricom inauzwa without public participation,” he stated.

To illustrate what he described as poor economic reasoning, Gachagua used a metaphor involving a family’s only productive cow.

“When we look at it from a different perspective, it’s like you have a high-yielding cow in your home, hio ngombe ndio inatoa maziwa watoto wanakunywa, we unakunywa na ingine inauzwa. Sasa wewe unauza hio ngombe na hauna ingine ati ununue chakula ya siku hio, sasa ukikula hio chakula, hauna ngombe ya kukamua,” he explained.

Gachagua Warns of a National Crisis

The former Deputy President went further, listing several state corporations the government has already sold or is preparing to sell, framing the actions as a national crisis that requires immediate attention.

“We are in a place in our country where Ruto is selling everything that is working. Kenya Pipeline ameuza, Kenya Port ameuza, airport ameuza na sasa Safaricom ameuza,” he said.

He concluded his address with a rallying call, urging citizens to reclaim the country’s assets and protect national wealth.

“We must liberate this country,” Gachagua asserted.
