AU envoy for infrastructure Raila congratulates Zambian president-elect Hichilema

The AU envoy for infrastructure Hon. Raila Amollo Odinga has congratulated Zambian president-elect Hakainde Hichilema on a stunning landslide victory over the incumbent Edgar Lungu.

In a message circulated on Odinga’s social media platforms, he congratulated Hon. Hichilema and went on to laud the election process as free, fair, credible and verifiable.

“I take this earliest opportunity to congratulate my friend Hakainde Hichilema and the United Party of National Development (UPND) of Zambia for the decisive victory in the presidential election. Amidst an unprecedented public health challenge, the Zambian people have made Africa proud for conducting a successful election.

A free, fair, credible and verifiable election always certainly return the will of the people,” read Mr. Odinga’s post in part.

Opposition leader Hichilema got 2,810,777 voters against incumbent Lungu’s 1,814,201. Hichilema,59, a former CEO of an accounting firm now faces the task of reviving Zambia’s economy despite Lungu indicating that he might challenge the result.
