After successful securing a course with Kenya universities and colleges central placement service, students are more intense on enquiring further about HELB loan applications.

Any Kenyan students pursuing Certificate, Diploma and Higher National Diploma courses in select Public Universities, select University Colleges, Public National Polytechnics, and approved TVET Colleges under the Ministry of Education are eligible for this loan and bursary.

HELB gives minimum of Sh37,000 and a maximum of Sh60,000 as loan to a university student annually. A percentage is directly send to your university/college account as part of your school fee payment.

The remaining amount is to been disbursed to the student’s personal account for personal upkeep. For SELF-SPONSORED learners, the whole loan amount is sent to the student’s university fees account.

When applying for the loan you will need to have the following documents ready.

1. Your national identity card.

2. Copies of the parents national ID Cards/death certificate where the parent is deceased.

3. Copies of your guarantors’ national ID Card. Should be 2. Latest updates says, your parent can be your guarantor.

4. A copy of the applicant’s admission letter and KCSE result slip/certificate.

HELB applications are channeled online through the students portal and a printed copy submitted to their offices or any HUDUMA centre near your location.

All HELB loan beneficiaries are required to start repayment of the loan within one year of completion of studies. Subject to change depending on the boards decisions to recall back the loan.

However, you can make voluntary payments before or after the completion of your studies to reduce your loan balance. HELB may deduct up to 25% of your Basic salary to repay the loan.
